BREAKING: Court Stops National Broadcasting Commission From Imposing Fines On Broadcast Stations In Nigeria
On 10 May 2023 Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja held that the National Broadcasting Commission has no power to impose fines on broadcast stations, finding that the sanctioning provisions of the Broadcasting Code conflict with the constitution's vesting of judicial power in the courts. The court set aside N500,000 fines the NBC imposed on 45 stations on 1 March 2019.
How this report was compiled
Every record in this report is compiled by hand from reports published by named rights monitors, news outlets and official bodies, and links to the source it draws on. Each record is dated to the incident where its source gives that date, and otherwise to the date the source was published. The figures show what has been recorded, not the full extent of what has happened: incidents that were never reported do not appear, and a state with few records is not necessarily a state where little took place.
